Should You Repair or Replace an Old Faucet?

When your kitchen or bathroom faucet starts leaking or acting up, the first question is usually whether you should call a plumber to fix it or just buy a new one. The answer depends on how old the faucet is, what's actually wrong with it, and how much money you want to spend right now versus down the road. I've been doing plumbing work in Conroe for years, and I can tell you that sometimes a simple repair saves you a couple hundred dollars. Other times, replacing the faucet is the smarter move because an old one will just keep failing.

How Old Is Your Faucet

A faucet that's 10 to 15 years old is usually a good candidate for replacement. Most quality faucets last about that long before the internal parts wear out. If you've got a faucet from the 1990s or early 2000s, you're already doing pretty well, but the seals and cartridges inside are probably getting tired. In the Texas heat and humidity here in Conroe, mineral deposits and corrosion can speed up that wear. A newer faucet will give you better water pressure and more reliable performance for the next decade or so.

If your faucet is less than five years old, a repair almost always makes sense. The parts are usually still available, and a new cartridge or washer kit costs way less than a replacement faucet.

What's Actually Broken

A dripping faucet from a worn washer or cartridge is a straightforward repair. I can usually fix that in 20 minutes or less. You'll pay for the service call and a small part, and you're done. A leaking faucet base where water pools under the sink is different. That means the seal between the faucet and the sink has failed, and the faucet is probably going to keep leaking no matter what. That's a replacement situation.

If the faucet handle is cracked, the spout is bent, or the finish is peeling in big patches, those are cosmetic issues that don't hurt function. But if the handle is stuck, the water won't turn off all the way, or you're getting a weak trickle from one side, those are internal problems. Sometimes I can rebuild the cartridge. Sometimes it's cheaper and faster to replace the whole thing.

The Cost Math

A typical repair call for a faucet leak runs between 150 and 300 dollars, depending on what needs fixing and how accessible the faucet is. Some bathrooms under the sink are tight spaces. A basic replacement faucet, installed, usually costs between 300 and 600 dollars. If you go with something nicer, you might spend 700 or more. That sounds like the repair is always cheaper, but here's the thing: if you repair a 20-year-old faucet today and it fails again in six months, you're paying for another service call. Two repairs can cost more than one replacement.

I often recommend replacement for older faucets because the peace of mind is worth it. You won't have water damage under your sink. You won't wake up to find your water bill doubled because of a slow leak you didn't notice.

Common Faucet Problems in Conroe

The mineral content in our water here in Conroe is fairly high, and that builds up inside faucet cartridges and aerators. A lot of customers call me about low water pressure or uneven flow, and it's usually mineral deposits blocking the aerator screen. That's a quick clean, sometimes a replacement aerator, and it costs next to nothing. But if the cartridge itself is clogged, you might need a full cartridge replacement.

Humidity and temperature swings also cause issues. Faucet seals can dry out and crack, especially in bathrooms that get a lot of steam. That leads to leaks that start small and get worse.

When Repair Makes Sense

Replace the faucet if it's old, if the problem is structural, or if you've already had it repaired once in the last few years. Repair it if it's relatively new, if the fix is simple, and if you're confident the part you're replacing will solve the problem. Some people also choose to repair because they like the faucet they have. If it's a good-looking fixture and the fix is straightforward, there's no reason to tear it out.

Make the Call

The truth is that a plumber can diagnose the problem in about five minutes and give you a straight answer. Sometimes we can fix it right there. Sometimes we can show you exactly why replacement is the better choice. You don't have to guess.
